Happy Birthday to you Papa ! Thank you very much Grandmum we love you

Queen Elizabeth II grants Princes their own households
Wednesday, January 7, 2009

Prince William and Prince Harry have been granted their own royal household by their grandmum, Queen Elizabeth II. It doesn’t mean that the royal hotties have scored their own apartments or houses, but they have been awarded staff who will support the heir and the spare in their public duties and private lives. The two princes will share one household with three main staff members including Sir David Manning, the former British ambassador to Washington who will work as a part-time adviser to Wills and Harry. But the real score is that the boys received cyphers (logos) to announce their household. William’s cypher is red - the same color used by the Queen and his father, Prince Charles - and consists of a “W” topped with a coronet. Harry’s cypher is similar, but has an “H” and is blue - a similar shade to that used by his late mother Diana, the Princess of Wales.

The Prince was handed a cake sporting a bus pass
Prince Charles chose to begin his milestone 60th birthday by meeting young people at a project run by his own charity in east London.
Showing no signs of fatigue after a lavish banquet in his honour the night before, the Prince, accompanied by the Duchess of Cornwall, could not escape the fact it was his special day.
He was greeted with cheers of 'Happy Birthday, sir', from assembled photographers, birthday banners were pinned to the wall and he was handed a cake sporting a bus pass by the Sun newspaper.
One passer-by even broke protocol to give the heir to the throne a birthday kiss on the cheek as he got into his car.
He was marking his 60th by launching the Prince Trust's Youth Week, which aims to highlight the positive contribution young people make to society.

When I asked him for the kiss he just leaned forward and went for it
Naiyer Qureshi
His first destination was a pavilion in Beckton where members of the Trust's Team programme, which teaches life skills, have reclaimed a disused bowling green for the community.
He admired murals before sitting and playing with three-year-olds who use the building's nursery.
Ibrahim Mehmit, who helped to paint the murals, shares the Prince's birthday, albeit with 40 years' difference.
"I wished him happy birthday and he wished me one back. Then he asked if I was 24 and I said 'No, I'm 20', and he said 'You're still young. I can't remember when I was 20," he said.
Ibrahim, who makes music and wants to work in the industry, said the Prince had defied his expectations.

The Team project teaches life skills to help young people get work
"I thought he would be stiff and just stand there, but he came across as a nice person and can talk to people, he's really down to earth," he said.
The royal party then moved onto the nearby Beckton Community Centre to meet a variety of young people the charity has helped with practical and financial support.
The Prince's Trust works with 14-30-year-olds who have struggled at school, been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law.
Since its 1976 inception, it has helped 575,000 people and supports 100 more every working day.
Charity's work
Among the guests was Steve Godwin, 27, who left school with no qualifications and found it hard to get work.
After years of drifting in and out of jobs he was advised to speak to the Prince's Trust about a business idea.
A £2,700 grant allowed him set up a leafleting business that offers information packs with ideas on activities young people can safely take part in outside of school.
"I now just feel really happy. Before, my whole life was failing, I had no hope for anything. I just think it's the most important charity you can come across, it actually makes changes for people," he said.

The Trust has helped 575,000 people since 1976
Cynics might say the life of a 60-year-old prince is a world away from the young people he met but on the day many said his charity's work provided relevance to their lives.
Steve Godwin said: "He must be a very nice man if he set up the Prince's Trust. It completely changes the lives of so many people, it plays an important part in youth culture."
In a speech launching Youth Week, the Prince congratulated the young people who he said were making "a fantastic difference" by leading and inspiring others.
He said: "A lot of the future is going to depend on all of you, and all you have been doing over all of these years, believe it or not, is investing in the future.
"So I hope you can provide the kind of return I've been expecting in terms of what you can do for your own communities and other people."
There was one more birthday surprise for the Prince as he left for his second birthday engagement, when Naiyer Qureshi from Beckton gave him a birthday peck on the cheek.
Speaking after the royals departed for a classical concert organised by The Prince's Foundation for Children and the Arts, she said she could not believe she had done it.
"He's not proud or stuck up and I just thought 'why not?'. The police didn't seem that bothered about keeping us back," she said.
"When I asked him for the kiss he just leaned forward and went for it. I thought should I go for the other cheek but I could see his wife in the background."

I am so surp-rised what great things God Almighty is doing in my life , everyday I have tons of miraculos responds to my Hope ,,, and even J J wept ,

As the crowd from all walks of life white and black, young and old, rich and poor, poured in the Grant Park in Chicago in their tens of thousands there stood one of the greatest Civil rights architect of all time Rev. Jesse Jackson weeping emotionally and uncontrollably.

At long last the curtains between the holy of holies and the Outer court of American and world politics have been finally rented and the words ‘All things are possible’ keeps reverberating and echoing loud in the minds of all creation.

Today after a long wait to see the first Black President of the United States of America, history has been made. A little over 200 years ago, slave trade was abolished; 44 years ago the civil rights law was passed in the United States of America by the 36th President of the United States of America President Lyndon Johnson enabling all men including Blacks to be able to exercise their franchise.

A year before that on the 28th of August 1963, from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the march on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, was a defining moment of the American Civil rights Movement was recorded when Dr. King delivered what I see as a national prophesy to over two hundred and fifty thousand civil rights supporters, the speech is often considered to be one of the greatest and most notable speeches in history and was ranked the top American speech of the 20th century by a 1999 poll of scholars of public address.

Just 18 years ago, the Blackman had no say in democratic issues in his own country in South Africa, but in 1994, Nelson Mandela’s election as South African President brought a glamour of hope to the Black continent and ended White minority dominated rule known as apartheid in South Africa.

I came to know about Obama in the summer of 2006 when I visited North Carolina to preach in a Local church. There I prophesied and declared that this man would rule the world shortly. At the time people thought I was too over zealous and questioned the Blackman’s readiness to rule America, anyway I have news for you, just this morning I read this email from President elect Barack Obama;

I know some people have argued that Barack Obama is not a black person anyway. I beg to differ. Barack is a first generation son of a Kenyan farmer from Kogelo in Northern Kenya, a Luo who migrated to America. Barack has always referred to himself as black. He has visited Kenya on many occasions and even has a school named after him in Kenya. Almost all the media houses in America, they refer to him as black as they do to anyone with a pint of black blood in his bloodstream.

Obviously I don’t expect Obama or America to solve all of Africa’s problems but it will in no doubt give hope to the hopeless, motivation to the young under achieving school drop out that truly all things are possible. Obama had a difficult life at some point in his up upbringing even to the extent of experimenting with drugs on some occasions but that was not enough to write him off from coveting the most important job the world has to offer today.

Where as I admit that this article might not resonate with everyone, I strongly believe there is some one out there just like the slaves that were forced out of the shores of Africa against their will, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther-King, Jesse Jackson amongst others, who have been buttered, bruised and abused not through any fault of theirs but because the skin of their colour. Who might have shed a few tears with Oprah Winfrey, Jesse Jackson and I through out last night when Barack Obama was declared the winner of the 2008 presidential election.

Today, America has shown that it doesn’t matter your colour or creed but the content of your character and what you have to offer. We have made so much progress in a short time since the late 1960s and I am very confident that this will change the face of world politics and the lives of young and old, black and white and Asian and Hispanic and anyone that wishes to achieve bigger things in life.

As Jesse Jackson wept, I could imagine what went through his mind. The America I grew up in has changed and that change has come at last through decades of priceless toils and bloodshed.

There is now a feeling of opportunities and possibilities. We can truly say that with ‘God all things are possible’. I can’t wait for the life story of Obama to be played by the likes of Will Smith in Hollywood, probably I will be one of the first to lay hands on the movie. Thank God at least this is not a movie but a reality.

Arise, arise my brothers and sisters and let’s take a clue from this as we build Africa and mother Ghana. Let put our house in order (Let the fighting cease, stop the corruption etc) and make it easy for ‘Nana’ Barack Obama to rule. To Barack I say kudos! Come on Barack! May The Lord Almighty help you rule with the wisdom of Solomon and the distinction of King David.

Shalom! Shalom ! Shalom!

I am all amazed that even the prince cares a lot about the neglected , old and sick people in all the corners of our univers ,, ,,,

Prince William launches Centrepoint's 40th anniversary year and gives a speech

6th November 2008
Prince William helped youth homelessness charity Centrepoint launch their 40th anniversary year this evening and spoke of the reasons he became involved with the charity.
Centrepoint, of which Prince William is Patron, has helped more than 70,000 young people since it was founded in 1969.
The charity works with young people, aged 16 to 25, and provides them with accommodation and support services.
After arriving at the reception, hosted by HSBC at offices on St James’s Street in London, Prince William was introduced to 10 young people who have all been helped and supported by the charity.
Later in a speech Prince William paid tribute to his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, who had been the charity's Patron from 1992 until her death in 1997, for introducing him to the charity.
He said: “I feel very closely linked to Centrepoint. It is a charity with which both my mother and father became passionately involved.
“Indeed, it was while my mother was Patron that Harry and I had our first contact with Centrepoint.”
“But it began to open my eyes to the world that so many young London people face.
“Our visits with our mother ignited a deep and growing interest for the great work the charity does for the homeless.
“That example of selfless service that Centrepoint represents has stayed with me, and that is why it was the first charity that I wanted to be associated with.”
The Prince also spoke of his feelings of pride at being Centrepoint’s Patron.
He said: “Since becoming Patron, I have been privileged to witness at first hand, and with the utmost admiration, the great work of its volunteers.
“But I have seen something else too: the extraordinary courage of so many of Centrepoint’s young people in rising to meet such seemingly insurmountable challenges in their lives.
“I count myself enormously privileged to be associated with such individuals, and with such an organisation as this.”
In a more light-hearted moment, Prince William said: "I don't want to say too much because there's lots of food and drink going around and the young guys probably want to get more involved in that than listen to me talk."
Afterwards, all the guests at the reception were moved by an emotional speech made by a young beneficiary, Samia Meah, 18, from Bangladesh.
She said: "I left home when I had barely turned 17; my father died when I was four, both my brother and mother suffered with mental illness and I was a young carer."
But Samia told the audience how the charity helped her through her difficulties and allowed her to become the person she had always wanted to be, telling guests about her aspiration to become a photographer.
She said: "After my A levels I received a card from Centrepoint congratulating me on my results. It made me cry because I had never received congratulations on anything I've ever done before.
“Centrepoint has given me the rest of my life, so thank you."
Soon afterwards Prince William spoke to Samia to praise her for her bravery in talking about her experiences.
She said: "He noticed I was overwhelmed, he said I did better than him speaking.
"He was lovely, really nice and friendly and I always wanted to meet him, I even went to the Diana concert last year to see him but didn't get to so I was thrilled to meet him finally tonight, he's great."
Other young people had the chance to chat with Prince William and talk about their experiences.
Scott Ingram, 18, from Hammersmith, West London, said how he had told the Prince that one idea he had was to introduce a "noise time".
He said: "We're teenagers, we don't have bed times so in the hostels it would be good instead to have noise time where people reduce their volume after a certain time.
"He agreed and said that perhaps we could bribe somebody with a Mars Bar."
Hopea Wasame, 21, from central London, said William was "really bubbly, he's really fun and he understands what we are talking about".
She said: "It means a lot to have Prince William supporting us and shows people care and that you don't have to be royal or a high-flyer – you just need to care."
Prince William's attendance at the event in central London marks the start of a year of 40th anniversary celebrations for the charity.

Former President Rawlings on Wednesday paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and later the Bantamahene, Nana Amankwaatia V, to seek their consent to hold a rally at Bantama.

Issues discussed included the role influential traditionalists had to play to ensure transparent, free and fair general election on December 7.

At Manhyia Rawlings appealed to Ghanaians to scrutinize presidential candidates before voting them into power as that will eliminate politics of lies and atrocities and ensure lasting peace and harmony.

He noted that choosing a national leader is quite different from the process leading to the selection of a traditional ruler where kingmakers vet the person to ensure that the right person is selected to lead them to glory and honor.

A statement issued by Kofi Adam, Special Aide to former President Rawlings quoted Otumfuo Osei Tutu II as advising the Electoral Commission not to connive with any political party to mar the December polls but prepare adequately to avoid technical challenges.

“He also warned politicians against bad utterances and insults, which bring confusion.”

“At the Bantamahene’s palace, Barfuor Amankwatia V commended the former president for his exceptional role in the country’s democratic process, which according to the chief has brought the country to the point where it is now, a role model for all Africa.”

He said his palace was always opened to the former President.

With Condoleeza Rice’s much-publicized visit to Libya, it looks as if the U.S. is going to turn over a new leaf in its ties with the African country it once called a pariah. Less well publicized is that the visit follows an amazing “colonization compensation” agreement with Italy – Libya’s former colonial master – that looks remarkably like the reparations some people have called for in the United States.

Apple iTunes Best Shirt Offer - Shirts for $36 or 4 shirts for $136

But first, Rice’s visit to Libya, which of course, was not really about Libya at all:

The Secretary of State was in Libya primarily to show North Korea and Iran that the U.S. is ready to resume cooperation with any country that ditches and scraps its nuclear program, and that the U.S. isn´t arbitrarily down on some countries. Paula De Sutter, Assistant Secretary of State for Verification and Compliance and Implementation made it clear: “The Secretary´s visit is going to be a huge demonstration of the fact that by changing behavior, a country can change the nature of a relationship.”

In addition, she wants to officially and publicly pave the way for an expansion of cooperation in the trade, investment, political, cultural and security areas between the two countries. That´s why the White House stated that Rice´s trip was opening a “new chapter” in the relationships between the U.S. and Libya. Dana Perino, President Bush´s press secretary explained: "By improving our relations with Libya, we will enable expansion of bilateral cooperation in a number of areas, including education and culture, commerce, science and technology, and most certainly security and human rights."

For his part, Moumar Qaddafi opined: “The whole business of conflict between Libya and the United States has been closed once and for all. There will be no more wars, raids or acts of terrorism.”

The State Department , once again, is confirming the old axiom that there are no permanent enemies, just permanent interests.

But, as with recent policy changes in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Bush Administration, by it actions, is admitting that Barack Obama´s doctrine of direct diplomacy just might actually make sense. Libya’s progress due to enegagement, in fact, would appear to be a major rejection of the reactionary, hardliner stands of John McCain. If the Saddam Hussein of the 80s can turn into the Tony Blair of the new millennium, then what else might be possible?

Meanwhile Silvio Berlusconi of Italy seems to be learning a similar lesson.

The Italian Prime Minister and Qaddafi patched up a decades old colonial feud, crafting a free and mutual agreement that will put Italy in a position to compensate Libya for colonizing the North-African country from 1911 through 1943.

Berlusconi announced that his country would offer Libya 3.4 billion euros – 5 billion dollars – over the next 25 years for pains and worries inflicted on Libyans during the Italian occupation and colonization that lasted more than three decades. In his words: “The agreement will be about 200 million US$ each year during the next 25 years under the guise of investments in infrastructure projects in Libya.”

He added: “The agreement is designed to put an end to 40 years of misunderstanding. It´s a thorough and moral acknowledgement of any damage, injury and harm meted out to Libya by Italy during the colonial era. “

According to the agreement, Italy will fund the construction of a freeway from Tunisia through Libya to Egypt. Furthermore, Italy will finance the development of housing in Libya, grant scholarships to Libyan students studying in Italy, and pay damages to those maimed by landmines laid by Italians during the colonial era.
Libya pledged, as quid pro quo, to intensify its fight against terrorism and to stem the flow of non-traditional migrants who often invade Italian coasts.

But does Italy’s relationship in Libya open up the door to other European nations – particularly those instrumental in the international slave trade - to start looking for other ways to compensate the formerly colonized in other places around the globe?

The French squashed that idea immediately. After the Italy/Libya agreement was announced France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs quickly released a statement that the deal constituted “neither a precedent nor a reference,” for “each bilateral history gets along as it wishes, each history is specific.”

Ghana and Italy on Wednesday signed an additional 22-million Euro credit line to support the growth of small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs), following the successful implementation of a first phase of the project.

The funds made available under the Ghana Private Sector Development Facility consist of a soft loan of 20 million Euros and a grant element worth two million Euros.

The Italian Ambassador to Ghana Mr Fabrizio De Agostini and Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu Finance Minister signed the agreement for the respective countries.

It is the second time the Italian government is making funds available to support Ghanaian SMEs. In 2003, it committed eleven million Euros to the project.

About 29 SMEs, mostly in agro-business, construction and hospitality industries, received between 97,000 and 450,000 Euros to finance their expansion plans and undertake installation of equipment to further their development activities.

Under the current deal, the soft loan of 20 million Euros will be channelled to qualified SMEs through local commercial banks and leasing companies to finance capital goods, consumables production inputs and services, as well as construction works.

The grant component is designed to facilitate the use of the credit through the activity of the project Management Unit, run by Italian and Ghanaian experts, which will assist the SMEs in preparing and in implementing their business plans.

The grant will also finance technical assistance through initiatives of institutional and decentralised capacity building, ICT development, metal works and building of capacity of staff of the Ministry of Trade.

Mr Baah-Wiredu underscored the importance of the SMEs sector to Ghana’s development and welcomed any initiative that would make it more vibrant and competitive.

The sector currently accounts for about 70 percent of all industrial establishments and generates about 85 percent employment.

He said the focus of the credit would be to support SMEs in the Brong Ahafo and the three Northern Regions.

Mr Agostini said the Italian government was encouraged by the successes chalked in the first phase of the project and would continue to share its experiences in the SMEs sector with their Ghanaian counterparts.

The loan will be repaid in 56 years with no interest.

Egyptians in Ghana celebrate 56th anniversary

The Egyptian community in Ghana on Tuesday marked the 56th anniversary of the 23rd revolution which took place in their country in 1952 and expressed their country's desire to maintain security and deepen bilateral cooperation with Ghana.

Mr. Allah Mustafa Nosseir, Egyptian Ambassador to Ghana, who invited some Ghanaians to share in the celebrations, said Egypt and Ghana were ready to promote and enhance economic and trade ties. "The two countries have shared common goals, targets and policies...politically, economically, commercially and in the field of technical cooperation," he said.

He said Ghana is benefiting from the Egyptian Fund for Technical Cooperation with Africa (EFTCA) in the areas of health and agriculture among others with the aim of promoting developmental issues. Under the EFTCA programme, medical doctors would benefit from training courses in Egypt while agricultural officers would also have the opportunity to train in different fields.

The Ambassador commended Ghana for hosting the 2008 African Cup of Nations where the Egyptian National team retained the cup. Mrs. Angelina Baiden Amissah, Deputy Minister in charge of pre-tertiary education at the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports, who represented President John Agyekum Kufuor expressed hope that the two countries would enjoy sustainable peace and stability, development and socio-economic progress.

"It is significant to note that Egypt was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations on the attainment of independence in 1957," she said. She noted that Ghana and Egypt played crucial roles in the formation of the Non-Aligned Movement, an organization in which both countries still remained active members.

Mr. Annan, the Nobel Peace Laureate, is the Chancellor of UG

Busumuru Kofi Annan, former United Nations Secretary General, has been appointed Chancellor of the University of Ghana, the University Council announced on Wednesday.

President John Agyekum Kufuor would perform his investiture and swearing-in on August 11 at a Special Congregation in Accra.

Mr. Annan succeeds the late Nana Wereko Ampem II, former Omanhene of Amanokrom and Gyasehene of Akuapim Traditional Area in the highest office of the University, formerly occupied by the Presidency until the coming into force of the 1992 Constitution.

The position had been vacant since the death of Nana Ampem II in 2005.

Mr. Anthony Oteng-Gyasi, Chairman of the Council, told newsmen at a press briefing in Accra that the Council was proud to have such a distinguished personality to work with.

He said the Council had the confidence that working with Mr. Annan would add credibility to the University.

Mr. Oteng-Gyasi stated that the appointment of the former UN Secretary General had come at a crucial time as the University celebrated its 60th Anniversary, describing his appointment as "an anniversary gift".

He therefore entreated the entire population to accept the appointment and to join the University to celebrate this illustrious son of Ghana.

On other decisions by the Council, Mr. Oteng-Gyasi said as part of efforts to improve systems within the University, it had adopted some recommendation of a Visitation Panel.

The panel was tasked to review the academic programmes, infrastructure, resources, administrative and governance structures of the University to meet national development needs and international accreditation standards.

He said an implementation committee would soon be inaugurated to implement some of the recommendations, which include the amendment of the University's basic law and the development of a human resource policy.

Other developments, the Chairman of Council mentioned were the construction of a central science laboratory to house the Department of Biochemistry and 12 specialised laboratories funded with the GETFund to be completed by December.

An over 6,000 bed capacity students hostel, being funded by Ghana Commercial Bank was also expected to be ready by May next year, Mr. Oteng-Gyasi said.

Other ongoing projects include a new Physics laboratory and a new complex for Performing Arts.

Professor Clifford Nii Boi Tagoe, Vice Chancellor, assured the public that the University was working at addressing accommodation needs of students.

He said it had entered into agreements with some banks to provide 26 million Ghana cedis for construction of hostels, adding that, it had also given lands to private developers to provide hostels of between 10,000 and 30,000 beds.

Prof. Tagoe also gave the assurance that the University would do its best to ensure that students graduate soon after completion of their courses.

CREATIVE WAYS TO MEET!

Be honest: When you go to an art museum, you’re not just checking out the paintings are you? Good! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with mixing a little culture and cruising. Start looking for love in some of these creative places, and you just might paint yourself a more interesting romantic picture.

Be a drama queen (or king)
Sitting in the dark with total strangers may not sound like a great way to mingle, but imagine if you could stick around for an exclusive private party after the show? More and more theater companies are offering “incentive” parties for their regulars to mix with other theater fans. The Roundabout Theatre in New York City (www.roundabouttheatre.org) now offers a special “Social Series” where anyone who buys a 3-, 5- or 8-show season pass is invited to post-performance cocktail parties with the cast and other subscribers. “It’s a low-pressure way to talk about theater with people who share your interests,” says Stefanie Schussel, marketing assistant for the Roundabout Theatre Company.

The Roundabout also has a gay/lesbian series, a wine-tasting series and a young adult program called Hiptix where 18- to 35-year-olds can enjoy a DJ dance party afterwards. “There have been two marriages that came out of the Social Series and countless relationships,” says Schussel, who notes that other performing-arts groups around the country—including the Arena Stage in Washington, DC, The Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, GA, the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, MN, the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, IL and the Seattle Repertory Theatre in Seattle, WA—now feature similar programs. Check with your local arts groups, because you never know who you’ll meet across a crowded lobby some enchanted evening.

Go on a scavenger hunt
Get to know your city in the most fun way possible: by racing through it trying to decipher clues and complete a scavenger hunt. “Before every hunt we ask people if they’d like to meet others and then we form teams with kindred spirits,” says Bret Watson, founder of Watson Adventures (www.watsonadventures.com), which runs these grown-up hunts in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Washington, DC and other cities. You can narrow the field by choosing a tour that matches your interests (offerings range from The Gangsters’ New York Scavenger Hunt to The Wild, Wild Life Scavenger Hunt at the San Francisco Zoo). And hey, if you do make a love connection, you two just might be back for another night to remember, notes Watson: “One guy booked a private hunt for a group of his friends so that he could propose to his girlfriend at the end.”

Make something
When was the last time you created your own masterpiece? If your answer is: “Age 10 in elementary art,” it’s high time you return to your creative roots. Joining a class to learn painting, photo-editing, etc. is a hands-on way of connecting with others. “People come together with a desire to create something,” says Bob Gereke, owner of Mud, Sweat & Tears, a pottery studio in New York City, “but what often happens in the process is that they create relationships and friendships as well.” But before signing on, strategize: If you’re looking to meet guys, consider joining a photography, filmmaking, or landscape-design class rather than a knitting circle. And guys: You’ll probably meet more ladies studying watercolor or pottery than woodworking. At the very least you’ll come out of the experience with something cool you made yourself.

Share your story
Love to read? Or to write? Or to rap? Storytelling events (including poetry jams and book readings) are a fresh way to connect with like-minded souls. At The Moth (www.themoth.org), bi-monthly storytelling forums called StorySLAMS — currently happening regularly in NY and LA in addition to storytelling tours nationwide — ten randomly selected people per night each get five minutes on stage to share their story on a pre-selected topic. At the end of the night, a StorySLAM winner is selected to compete in a future StorySLAM final. “These events are very rowdy, fun and all-inclusive,” says Sarah Jenness, a senior producer at The Moth. “You’ll often end up sitting at a table with someone you didn’t know before the night started but people always end up talking and sharing stories before or after the show and during intermission… it’s just a very open environment.” Nowhere near a Moth event? Check your local area bookstore for readings and discussion groups, because word-play can be quite the turn-on.

Pull an “art-nighter”
Ever been to an art museum after dark? More and more art museums keep their doors open late to encourage mingling while admiring master works. The Art Institute of Chicago has a “Target Summer Hours” program (free admission on Thursday and Friday nights from 5-9 p.m. after Memorial Day), which is usually jam-packed with single professionals. The Getty Museum in Los Angeles offers “Fridays Off the 405” and “College Night,” social events which often include themed evenings tied to current exhibits. And the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) hosts an annual late-night party running from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. that includes live performances, DJ sets and free admission to the museum. “If two people are viewing the same piece of art on the wall, it’s an excellent conversation-starter and a non-invasive way to break the ice and meet someone,” says Heidi Simonian, media relations manager for LACMA.

Shake your groove thing
Suddenly ballroom dance is all the rage again. And social dancing will definitely bring you into close proximity with other “eligible” dance partners. “When you ballroom dance you automatically get to have fun and interact with someone of the opposite sex,” says Jonathon Roberts, a Dancing with the Stars professional and United States Ballroom Dance Champion. Roberts suggests that singles attend a group class or go out dancing (think swing, country-western line dancing or salsa at a local club). “Guys are always afraid to look like idiots on the dance floor but for single men, there is no better place to pick up women,” says Roberts. One place to start? Check out the United States Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association (www.usabda.org) for social dances and classes in your area.

Act like a starving artist
If you’re lacking the funds to become an arts supporter, check out www.goldstarevents.com, which offers cheap tickets to performing arts events nationwide (including many reduced-price artistic adventures for singles). Recent bargain offerings included photography trips, art tours, and theater tickets. “These events have a tendency to bring people together to connect and share—key ingredients in a budding romance,” says Goldstar Events CEO Jim McCarthy. “And, because we offer tickets at half-price, people can experience a great night out inexpensively and often.” Who says you have to suffer for your art? Or for your social life?
